Day 1: Scenic Drive to Hidroelectrica & Trek to Aguas Calientes

6:30 AM – Departure from Cusco
Your adventure begins with a pick-up at 6:30 AM from the Machu Picchu Reservations office in Cusco, where we board our comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the scenic drive. Relax as we make our way through the picturesque Sacred Valley, passing through charming Andean villages, vibrant landscapes, and dramatic mountains. The journey offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys and rivers, creating an unforgettable first impression of the region.

Travel to Hidroelectrica
Our scenic drive continues for approximately 6 hours until we reach Hidroelectrica, a small hydroelectric station nestled in the heart of the Andes. Along the way, we’ll pass lush forests, clear rivers, and spectacular mountain ranges. As we near Hidroelectrica, the lush vegetation and dramatic changes in terrain set the stage for the next leg of our journey.

Lunch in Hidroelectrica

3-Hour Trek to Aguas Calientes
After lunch, the next part of the adventure begins: a scenic 3-hour trek (11 km) from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes, the base town of Machu Picchu. The trail is mostly flat and follows the Urubamba River, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes, including dense jungles, breathtaking waterfalls, and towering peaks. Morning: Journey to Machu Picchu – Walking or Bus

Option 1: Bus Ride to the Citadel
For those who prefer a more relaxed start, take the scenic bus ride up to the Machu Picchu entrance, where the iconic citadel awaits. The bus departs from Aguas Calientes and takes about 30 minutes to reach the entrance. Please note that a bus ticket (approximately $12 USD) can be purchased at the bus station in Aguas Calientes.

Option 2: Walking to Machu Picchu – A 1.5 Hour Hike
For the more adventurous, choose the hiking route to the entrance. Begin your ascent early in the morning at 4:30 AM after breakfast. The 4 km trek takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, leading you along a winding trail through lush jungle and mountain landscapes. Reaching the entrance by 6:00 AM, you’ll be among the first to see the sun rise over the ruins, offering a magical, peaceful experience before the crowds arrive.

Meeting Point at the Main Entrance

2:00 – 2:30 PM – Departure from Hidroelectrica
Upon reaching Hidroelectrica, you’ll board the comfortable minibus for the drive back to Cusco. The 6-hour drive will give you the chance to relax and unwind, as you traverse the stunning landscapes of the Andes. The journey is a great opportunity to reflect on the incredible experiences you’ve had over the past two days and to admire the beauty of the Sacred Valley one last time.

Arrival in Cusco
You will arrive in Cusco by 8:00 PM, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, marking the conclusion of your unforgettable Machu Picchu by Car tour.
