The Humantay Lake located in Mollepata is a vibrant turquoise lake surrounded by snowcapped mountains, one of which is called Humantay Mountain and whose name means “under the snow” and can be seen on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. The lake, which for a long time was a part of the tourist route to Machu Picchu, is truly majestic and impressive and worth venturing to in order to experience it first-hand.

Day 1Cusco - Humantay Lake

You will be picked up bright and early from your hotel to begin the four-hour drive with private transportation to Soraypampa which is at 3 850 meters in elevation. This location is the campsite for the first day of the Salkantay trek (click here for more info). We will have a delicious breakfast in Soraypampa to fuel us for our trek. After breakfast we’ll begin gradually climbing to reach Humantay Lake located at 4 200 meters above sea level. Along the way you will see beautiful views and if the sky is clear enough we should catch sight of the impressive snowcapped peaks of Salkantay and Humantay Mountains. The hike is approximately one and a half hours longs and is low to moderate is difficulty, but well worth it when you see the magical views. You do have the option to rent a horse if you prefer. Once we have reached our destination, there will be plenty of time to take pictures, bring an offering to Apus, the mountain spirit and for the brave trekkers, take a dip in the lake when it’s sunny! After some free time, we will start our decent back to Soraypampa. When back in town we will have lunch and afterwards begin the journey back to Cusco where we will arrive at approximately 6:00 pm.
