Detail

If you are unable to secure a reservation for the 4-day Inca Trail, there are excellent alternatives in Peru, such as the renowned 2-day, 1-night Inca Trail. This trek is celebrated as one of South America’s most famous, offering essential experiences and breathtaking natural vistas, along with visits to archaeological sites that trace the paths of my ancestors to Machu Picchu.

It’s important to keep in mind that, on this one-day tour, access to the entire Machu Picchu archaeological site is limited. Due to regulations set by the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, those completing the One-Day Inca Trail are only permitted to explore the upper section of the site. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and have the perfect opportunity to capture the iconic photos of the Lost City of the Incas.

However, after enjoying this awe-inspiring perspective, you will need to exit the park, as further exploration of Machu Picchu’s lower areas is not allowed for those on the One-Day Trail. The tour then continues with a scenic journey to the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, where you can relax and enjoy some free time before your return to Cusco.

This limited access does not diminish the experience, though; the views from the upper terraces provide a unique and memorable encounter with one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites. While the journey may be shorter, the adventure is no less spectacular, offering a meaningful glimpse into the rich history of Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Km 104 - Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

Embark on your journey with an early morning departure from Cusco at 5:00 am, where we’ll pick you up from your hotel. A scenic drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas takes us to Ollantaytambo train station, followed by a picturesque 1.5-hour train ride to km 104—the starting point of our trek. Along the way, you’ll witness diverse ecosystems and stunning vistas.

Upon arrival at km 104, we proceed to the checkpoint, where we present our documents and tourist tickets. The trek commences with a visit to Chachabamba, an ancient archaeological site nestled at 2,170 meters (7,170 feet) above sea level. This site served as a ceremonial and administrative center for the Incas. We then embark on a moderate 3-hour ascent to Wiñay Wayna, another significant Incan site at 2,650 meters (8,700 feet), renowned for its diverse flora and breathtaking views.

After a picnic lunch at Wiñay Wayna overlooking the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba River, we continue through a semi-tropical forest for 1.5 hours to Intipunku (the Sun Gate) at 2,720 meters (8,920 feet). Here, we enjoy our first panoramic view of Machu Picchu.

A knowledgeable guide will lead you through a fascinating and informative tour, highlighting the history, architecture, and cultural significance of this ancient wonder.

After exploring Machu Picchu, you’ll have time to soak in the beauty of the site at your own pace before departing. At approximately 5:00 pm, you’ll board a comfortable 30-minute bus ride from Machu Picchu to the charming town of Aguas Calientes. Once you arrive, you can unwind and enjoy a well-deserved dinner at a local restaurant, sampling delicious Peruvian cuisine in the heart of the Andes.

Following your meal, you’ll board the scenic train at around 6:30 pm for a 1.5-hour journey back to Ollantaytambo, offering a relaxing ride through the stunning Sacred Valley. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a private transfer will be waiting to take you on the final leg of your journey—an approximately 1.5-hour drive back to Cusco, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel around 10:00 pm.
